Japanmanship opinion poll

I've been looking for ways to expand Japanmanship and involve readers a bit more. After searching around and testing some free poll websites I have decided to try AddPoll.com to see if this blog has had any influence, positive or negative, on its readers.

  1. Nice to see the breadth of positive options!

  2. Has reading this blog changed your mind about working in the Japanese game industry?

No not really I like games and Japan got my interest. I would like to visit it someday. But the main reason I come on this blog is that the articles are always well written and interesting.

  3. It hasn't changed my mind, rather informed me in excellent and amusing ways of the hell I'm about to expect :)

  4. It's not really an ambition of mine. I'm more of an industrial software engineer anyway, with a strong passion for the Japanese gaming industry in general.

  5. No but it wasn't an ambition of mine anyway - Though I am a Brit interest in living/working abroad in a few years so the opinion of another fish out of water is quite interesting ;)

I come for the jokes, stay for the steak... or something...

  6. Still an ambition, but your comments about low-salaries and general bad management will make me think twice before moving to the country of the rising sun..

  7. I would like to visit Japan, but I haven't really thought about living or working there. It will be enough of a challenge for me to make it into the games industry in the UK.

...but, who knows what the future holds?

Keep up the good blogs. I always enjoy reading them.

  8. For those not dissuaded: good on you! I'm glad not everybody is put off by this blog, as that isn't really my intention. A friend told my how odd my blog was with on the one hand useful advice for people moving here and on the other a load of horror stories about the industry. If Japan needs anything it's a bigger influx of foreigners; just trying to do my bit, though not always succesfully.

  9. It's the pay, JC, that is mind boggling and was a huge hit to interset of my own once you posted on it. I mean, there is getting paid less and then there is getting paid so much less it could affect your ability to retire multiple years earlier. Which seems to be the case in the Japanese game industry as of now.

  10. Yes, pay is usually the biggest shock for newcomers. At the very least I can tell you all about the status quo, so you know what to expect or how hard you'll have to fight for decent pay.

  11. Have to agree with anonymous no 2 (just above me) about the pay being the biggest off-putter (new word?). On the other hand, I might end up in Japan with my girlfriend in a couple of years anyway. It's good to know what I can expect if I try to get a job as a game artist in Japan so a big thank you for a great blog with a lot of interesting content!

  12. I really think horror stories about the games industry are almost the same everywhere. And bad management seems to be universal i'm afraid.
The pay is obviously an important factor, but it's not the most important for me. But long working hours for free are something i dislike a lot though, and something that makes me hesitate working in Tokyo.
Still, i tried living in Montreal and i'm really bored to death by this city and i miss the noise, the colors and the energy of Tokyo...

  13. This blog is always an intereting read for sure! I was used to horrible work conditions in America as a tester so horrible work conditions as a Planner didn't really scare me.

What ultimately kept me from going to Japan was hitting the career jackpot in the USA, my Japanese sucking by Planner standards(probably would have been fine for art or programming.)

That and I wouldn't be able to take my 80lb labrador doggie. No, I can't imagine life without him.

I would like to build a good business relationship with Japan within the next year.

  14. I'm about the same as Jeff Lambert, that is an industrial software engineer with a passion for Japanese gaming and gaming in general. I'm engaged to a Japanese woman at the moment, and we hope to move to Japan within the next 5 years.

I really enjoy your blog. Keep up the good work!

  15. Well I already knew about the bad working conditions in japan, it's not just in the gaming business is it? It didn't change my view of working in japan much, I already know I don't want to work there. But perhaps spending some time there without a job.

What I am curious about though, is for example the difference of positions in the companies, like for example a designer position vs. an artist position.

I am more of a designer, and I wonder if they also have the typical overwork schedules.
